As we know, the managing and sponsoring of any University, is not like other institutions; such as polytechnics and colleges of education. That is why it is being regarded as the most important aspect in all educational sectors particularly in katsina state, under the leadership of governor Ibrahim Shehu Shema. But what we believe is that the importance of University can not be over emphasized, because it is the one that produces good leaders who will move the nation in socio-economic and political direction.
The recent crisis and mis-understanding between Asuu Umaru Musa Yar'adua University katsina state chapter and Governor Ibrahim Shema over their allegation on agreement of the new salary structure has become a cut throat among themselves.
Similarly, it was in that controversial situation, after Asuu held a meeting released a communique that “katsina state government sponsored a tour to all 34 members of House of assembly to China without giving any reason for that tour” but House assembly denied that they were not sponsored by state government.
The union of this (UMYU) has been boiling out since the university claimed that, the katsina state government has not made any response about their demand almost ten months ago. Asuu organized a press conference with news men in katsina to indicate their stand over the issue that state government did not even consider. With saying “this implementation has already been approved by the federal government”
In the same vein, the special adviser on higher education of katsina state during a meeting both Asuu and state government, he lamented that the state government has already set-up a committee that gives the advice to resolve the matters, with the saying “ I assured that, the state government is fully aware about the issue and very soon will announce the stand”.
After a prolonged, yet state government did not any physical replayed from their own side. This was led an acute action taken by union of UMYU katsina state chapter to organize a second press conference with news men in the University compass.
The union warned the government about a problems that Umaru Musa Yar'adua University may face before October, 2010 include: 1 brain drain to other neighboring Nigerian University that are massively recruiting academic staff to meet the minimum NUC requirement for establishing a university. 2 risk of some departments in the university being shut down by forthcoming NUC accreditation team for not meeting the minimum staff NUC requirement to exist as accredited units of the university. My question to the state governor is, does he want these disasters that have already mentioned affect this university with his negligent?
The prompt replied by the katsina state government through special adviser on media and public relation Malam Nasir Abdul says “what UMYU Asuu did on the issue of implementation new salary structure it was totally wrong, to say government refused their demand after months in dialog”.
Here, our concern, both Asuu and state government who wants destroying Umaru Musa Yar'adua University in particular?
The whole staff and non-staff of the UMYU knew the history of established the university by the later President Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar'adua when he was a governor in katsina state.
Also the governor of katsina state knows the importance of educations and he has been proud the sector as priority, so we don't know which kind of play with part of people's life?
My advice to governor of katsina state, if he is taking this problem as menial thing, surely will led him to loss the katsina state gubernatorial election.
